The Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra (SCJO) showcases the outstanding talent emerging from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Jazz Studies program—the oldest and one of the most prestigious tertiary jazz course in Australia. Renowned for producing generations of exceptional performers, composers, arrangers, and educators, the program continues to shape the future of Australian jazz on the national and international stage.

The Conservatorium’s Big Band program comprises four Big Bands, all of whom will be performing at Lazybones on October 14, making it the largest university jazz orchestral program in the Southern Hemisphere and among the largest in the world. At its pinnacle is the Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra  1, the flagship ensemble, whose alumni include many of Australia’s most celebrated jazz artists, Freedman Fellowship recipients, National Jazz Award winners, and an impressive cohort of internationally acclaimed musicians now based in New York and performing on the global stage who will perform at the end of this incredible concert.

Under the direction of acclaimed Australian jazz musician, educator, and big band specialist David Theak the SCJO program presents a dynamic repertoire that reflects both the rich traditions and exciting future of large ensemble jazz. The program has been carefully curated and meticulously rehearsed, featuring cutting-edge original works by some of the world’s leading contemporary composers alongside timeless big band classics. Audiences can also expect fresh, contemporary reinterpretations of beloved vocal standards, showcasing the versatility and creativity of this exceptional ensemble.

For their performance at Lazybones, the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra will celebrate the music of the legendary Thad Jones, one of the most influential composers and arrangers in jazz history. Jones’ sophisticated harmonies, infectious swing, and unforgettable melodies have captivated audiences around the world for decades and continue to inspire generations of musicians. This performance pays tribute to his enduring legacy while highlighting the remarkable artistry, precision, and energy of Australia’s next generation of jazz performers. Tonight’s concert will feature 4x 30min sets by CJO 4, (Directed by Steve Williams), CJO 3 (Directed by Andrew Robertson), CJO 2 (Directed by Simon Sweeney) and CJO 1 (Directed by David Theak)
