FREQS & GEEKS Showcases from electronic artists based in Lutruwita/Tasmania—emerging, established, and everything between. A space for the unclassifiable. Hypnotic, chaotic, euphoric, and raw. Textures that swallow you whole.
VARX is an ambient electronic artist improvising live with synths, pedals, vocals and other gadgets. Obsessed with the power of drones, improvisational techniques and coming from a long career as an audio technician, VARX creates music that transforms familiar moments into something new, offering listeners an intimate experience where the ordinary is made unfamiliar. More dreamlike than harsh, and never the same show twice.
VARX’s approach is a dynamic mix of organic and electronic elements, exploring the space between rhythm and tone that is immersive and hypnotic. VARX is the solo name for Bek Varcoe who also plays in Palais with Julia Drouhin, the Tasmanian Midi Orchestra, and the Lutruwita Art Orchestra.
Agrestal Light is a new Luturwita-based experimental ambient project created and helmed by Sova Locus (Valagnor/Thirsty Blade) alongside co- conspirator Vis Ortis (Mekigah). Their debut album ‘Visions in Convex’ was released this year by Hobart label Frustration Jazz and featured contributions from four interstate experimentalists traversing noise, drone, free improvisation and atonal soundscapes. Focused and violent in duo form for their second ever live exorcism.
