The Capitol Theatre Orchestra meets Germany’s CHA CHA 5 + 1 for one unforgettable afternoon of New Orleans jazz, swing and dancing at Brunswick Ballroom. Doors, kitchen, bar and dance floor open from 12pm — dress for the Jazz Age and stay for the music.

A century ago, Melbourne’s ballrooms, theatres and dance halls had resident jazz orchestras playing music made for dancing — not sitting quietly in the dark. Born in 1924 for the opening of Walter Burley Griffin’s legendary Capitol Theatre, the Capitol Theatre Orchestra brings that golden-era spirit back to life, celebrating its centenary with authentic swing, beloved classics and rare Jazz Age treasures.

Joining them direct from Thuringia, Germany, CHA CHA 5 + 1 bring the joyous, hot sound of old-time New Orleans jazz to Brunswick. Formed by seasoned musicians brought together for a tour of Georgia, the six-piece features trumpet, clarinet, trombone, banjo, tuba and piano — a full-blown vintage-jazz party with deep roots in the dance halls of the 1920s.

From “Happy Feet” to “Singin’ in the Rain,” plus plenty of rare gems rescued from the Jazz Age vault, this is a full afternoon of live music, great food, refreshing drinks and a dance floor ready to be used.
