A Nightmare on Dangdut Street ft. The Jawa Pitu Band live at The Workers Club - Concert poster
Riding the success of their new album Kapindho, The Jawa Pitu Band bring their dangdut grooves to The Workers Club for a spooky Friday the 13th show that’s more spellbinding than unlucky. Their sound draws deeply from dangdut, Indonesia’s intoxicating fusion of Javanese, Hindustani, Malay, Arabic and Western influences, and weaves it together with the meditative pulse of gamelan, the improvisation of jazz and the danceable rhythms of funk. The Jawa Pitu Band will perform a bewitching 90-minute set of ghoulishly good grooves, guaranteed to raise the dead and get them dancing. Opening the night’s more otherworldly side is Rayhan Sudrajat, an Indonesian musician and sound artist working at the intersection of traditional sound, electronic music and sonic experimentation. His solo set centres on the sape, the traditional lute of Borneo, stretched into eerie atmospheres through ambient electronics and live processing. Rooted in regional musical sensibilities, it’s a dialogue between heritage, memory, place and sound, and one that may raise the hairs on your neck. Rounding out the night are DJ sets from Pradip Sarkar of PBS FM’s Tiger Beats Elephant Grooves show, bringing dangdut and South Asian funk, hip-hop, electronic and dance music well past the witching hour. Come down for a night that’s frightfully good fun…. the only thing you’ll be scared of is missing out!
